#012 How precious!…

作品:あらたふと

Size: about 34×25 cm

What kind of verse?

verse: Ara tafuto aoba wakaba no hi no hikari
(imho): How precious! green leaves and fresh leaves, light of sun
poet: Matsuo, Basho
in: 1689

Fresh leaves in this season are very shiny, so we feel refreshed and appreciate the sun. i agree with Mr. Basho who admired “how precious!”

This verse was created in Nikko. Sun light, nikko in Japanese, raising new leaves and name of the place “Nikko” were contained in this verse. The sun and Mr. Ieyasu who has been enshrined in the Nikko as a guardian deity of the Tokugawa shogunate, both are holy.

Speaking of Mr. Ieyasu, there is a rumor that Mr. Basho was a secret agent employed by of the shogunate.
One of the reason is very fast his travel itinerary. He leaved Fukagawa in 27th May, and arrive at the foot of the Nikko mountain in 30th. It means that he walked near 150 km in 3 days.
During the travel, he had some events like creating a verse for separation with send-off people, and visiting Muro-no-Yashima etc. That is why, the walking speed was very fast!
